Leading the Way Home and the Van Cleve Development
Cabrini Partnership, in collaboration with Project for Pride in Living (PPL), is in the process of creating an innovative housing complex known as the Van Cleve Development. This project in the Southeast Como neighborhood of Minneapolis reuses a treasured local landmark, the historic Bunge grain silo. More importantly, it provides substantial affordable and supportive housing along with high standards of sustainable design.

The Van Cleve Development has received two Best in Real Estate awards from the Minneapolis St. Paul Business Journal: one for best Multifamily Development/Redevelopment-small and another for Best in Multifamily Development.
According to the Journal for the second award, “The Van Cleve Apartments West redevelopment of the former Bunge grain silo is just as impressive as its 2008 Best in Real Estate award predecessor, the Van Cleve Apartments East, and in some ways more so.”
“We are delighted that the Van Cleve Development has received such positive feedback from the community and through these awards,” said Mary Morris, executive director at Cabrini Partnership. |
With the neighborhood association and architect UrbanWorks, Cabrini Partnership and PPL planned an economically integrated community. Extensive environmental remediation has been performed on the former industrial site. Two buildings with 85 apartments are incorporating sizeable green design features including passive solar heating techniques, 50 percent certified sustainable lumber in the construction, Energy Star appliances and light fixtures and low flow toilets and showerheads.
The redevelopment of the site will preserve the Bunge head house—an icon visible in much of Minneapolis. Of the 85 affordable rental units, 20 provide homes for Cabrini Partnership permanent supportive housing participants. Five townhomes have been built by Habitat for Humanity.
